Dr Rupinder Grewal

Dr Rupi is an Orthopaedic Consultant who has been practising at Basildon University Hospitals NHS Trust and Private Hospitals in Brentwood and Southend for 18 years. She has been a mould-breaker in a specialty where women were considered the wrong sex when she started her training. She was the first women to be trained in Orthopaedics at the Royal London Hospital in 250 years and remains the only woman Orthopaedic consultant in the Basildon and Brentwood area. She was awarded the FRCS from the Royal Colleges of England’s and Edinburgh and also the Trauma and Orthopaedic FRCS from the Royal College of England. Rupi did a three-year clinical upper limb and research fellowship from Pittsburgh and another clinical hand and microsurgery fellowship from Louisville. She was awarded one of five American Hand Society Grants in a year and the Sumner L Koch award by ASSH for her research in the USA. She was also awarded the National Westminster Research Fellowship during her training in the UK. She has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and written book chapters.

As a consultant, Rupi introduced many new procedures to Basildon including small hand and wrist joint arthroscopic procedures and replacements. She has also been an honorary clinical teacher for UCL for sixteen years. Rupi has been the audit lead and clinical governance lead for T&O and introduced several measures to improve documentation, data collection and communication. She was the clinical governance lead for the surgical division where she was instrumental in setting up the governance structure. She is currently the clinical lead appraiser for the surgical division. She has also been active in teaching and training programs and has organized regional hand surgery meetings, training courses for non-medical theatre staff and for registrars. She is a human factors trainer and introduced the human factors training to Basildon theatre staff. She has been Chair of the medical advisory committee at Brentwood Nuffield Hospital and is now their clinical governance lead. In her spare time, she is an active Rotarian and enjoys stained glasswork, pottery, painting and travelling.
